Consider a suspension of particles of density po in an interstitial fluid of density p_c. Let p_D>c, the particles are "heavy" and settle to the bottom in a gravity field (the subscripts C and D denote the continuous and dispersed "phases"). The bulk (or averaged) density is where is the volume fraction of the dispersed 'phase", in general a function of space and time.
