Magnesium alloys are particularly suited to the production of thin rangy parts via high pressure die casting (HPDC). This process is characterized by a very fast alloy solidification resulting in a fine structure imparting good mechanical properties as long as the tendency to porosity resulting from the very fast injection is kept under control. Due to the vet:), high cost of HPDC tooling, prototype parts are usually poured in sand molds. Contrary to parts produced front wrought stocks, the mechanical properties in a cast parts vary substantially from one zone of the part to another be-cause of the different solidification conditions. As mechanical properties are usually assessed on a standard separately cast specimen, it is important to verify to what extent they differ from those inside the casting. This is the purpose of the present study, which will compare the tensile properties of standard ASTM B80 specimens to those of sand cast plates, 2mm, 3mm and 4mm in thickness.
