Coronary artery disease (CAD), a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally, is among the most common causes of sudden natural deaths in Australians under the age of 35 years [1]. Although inflammation is a key process in atherogenesis, little is known about specific regulators of inflammation in premature onset CAD. Inflammation contributes to the development of CAD, and cytokines are specifically implicated in the pathogenesis of premature CAD [2], Knowledge regarding novel interleukins, e.g. IL-27, -29 and IL-31-34, has emerged as they relate to various inflammatory disease states (e.g., colitis, psoriasis, and COPD), but little is known regarding their specific role in atherogenesis.Coronary artery specimens were obtained from 50 premature (<60 y) and 50 mature (>60 y) male decedents where CAD was the cause of death at post-mortems performed at the NSW Department of Forensic Medicine, Australia, between 2009 and 2012, as described previously [2]. These cases had no recorded history of illicit drug use. Twenty non-cardiac-death controls were further recruited. This study was conducted in strict compliance with the Sydney Local Health District Ethics Review Committee, Australia.
