Written communication: From staff nurse to nurse consultant. Part 3: Email communication

This is the third article in the 'staff nurse to nurse consultant' series examining the various waysthatwrittencommunication is used by the clinically based nurse. The first two articles explored the core principles of all written communications: clarity, precision, brevity, presentation and avoiding jargon (Fowler, 2014a) and their application to writing patient records (Fowler, 2014b). This issue examines electronic communications. Future articles will cover care studies, literature reviews and research, incident reporting, raising concerns, business plans, portfolios and reflections, CVs and letters of application.
