摘要

SGS: Leo, as you know, this is one of the series of interviews with major figures in the field of gynecologic pathology that appear in the Journal and certainly you are one of those. It is my great pleasure to be able to be your interlocutor, especially since we've known one another for many years and you have been one of my mentors. It will be wonderful to hear what you liave to say about your remarkable career and some of those you have known. Even if you were not a famous pathologist, your life is of such interest that your story would be worthwhile anyway, so it might be interesting to sta?~t with some of the story of your early life.LGK: The story of my life is complicated. I wrote down some of it for the benefit of my sons so that they would know where I came from and what I did in my early years. As you know, I was born in Poland, to be specific, I was bom in Danzig, which, at that time in 1920, was a Free City, not a part of Poland. The most likely reason why I was born in Danzig was the Soviet-Polish War in 1920. The Soviet armies were at the gates of Warsaw where my parents lived. As my mother was very pregnant with me, my parents escaped to Danzig on the Baltic coast, which was protected from the events of the war. To the best of my knowledge, I only stayed hi Danzig for about 2 weeks after my birth and we returned to Warsaw. My mother's hometown was Warsaw; my father's, Lodz. Both of my parents came from rather well-known families in their respective societies. My mother's family was known for brick making-they had a rather large brickyard. My father's side of the family was known for its skill in textile manufacturing. My onlysister, Stephanie, was born there in 1924. Unfortunately, she perished with my parents during the Holocaust.
