In this investigation experimental results of the observation of the flow front during isothermal die filling are compared with the numerical results of a two-phase simulation. For different filling velocities the flow front has been videotaped. After each experiment the spatial distribution of the solid phase in the sample component has been analyzed. Simulations have been carried out with a self-developed 3-D FEM software, based on a two-phase thixotropic model. A new numerical algorithm for free surface tracking has been invented, in conjunction with pseudo-density transport equation solution in Lagrangian framework. Simulations are compared with the experimental results in terms of flow front and spatial distribution of solid fraction, thus proving full applicability of the software.
