摘要

Is one type of antibiotic prophylaxis better than another or none in terms of the prevention of urinary tract infection (UTI), complications, quality of life and cost-effectiveness for short-term catheterised adults?Indwelling short-term urinary catheters are commonly used for bladder drainage during hospital care; however, approximately 80% of UTls acquired in hospital are associated with catheter use. In nursing, the primary focus on the prevention of catheter-associated UTI is to avoid catheterisation where possible, to minimise the length of time the catheter is in place and to utilise evidence-based bundles of care when in use. The use of antibiotic prophylaxis is controversial; although systemic antibiotics can reduce the risk of catheter-association UTI, it is unclear whether this benefit offsets the risk of side effects or the risk of emergence of bacterial resistance. Nurse prescribers need to evaluate the benefit of antibiotic prophylaxis against a background of increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria, cost and other complications of antibiotic use.
