Question What is the effectiveness of oral over-the-counter (OTC) preparations for acute cough in adults and children in ambulatory settings? Relevance to nursing care Acute cough due to upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is one of the most common symptoms worldwide. Many adults use OTC cough medicines for themselves and their children yet their effectiveness has not been clearly proven. Hence, it is imperative that nurses are aware of the effectiveness of OTC cough medicines in order to provide sound patient advice.
