The Government has accepted all of the recommendations of the Caldicott report (Department of Health (DH), 2013), emphasising that it is important to share information with the intention of providing good care for all. However, there are guidelines and rules that have to be followed. The overarching aim was to ensure that there is an appropriate balance between protecting the person's information and the use and sharing of such information to improve care. It is imperative that all health and social care organisations succeed in both respects, if they purport to serve the people who use their services. Everyone should be able to feel confident that the information about our health is securely safeguarded and only shared (appropriately) when in the person's interest. All those working in the health and social-care system should consider information governance as part of their responsibility.
