Over the next 6 months, this series of articles will explore a number of elements relating to teaching and learning. The topics covered will include clinical teaching, experiential learning, planning a teaching session, mentoring students, teaching a skill, patient education, giving a lecture, teaching attitudes, running a seminar and preparing a handout. Are you still a student and don't think you have a teaching role yet? Have you been qualified for 20 years and feel relatively comfortable with your knowledge base? Or are you so busy at work and home that there is no time for teaching? Whoever you are, you must remember that the qualification you hold, or are working towards, is that of registered nurse. You therefore have a responsibility to yourself, your profession and your patients, not only to maintain and develop your professional knowledge and practice but also to help others learn as well.
