Tourism has been formally recognised as a contributing factor towards the Millennium Development Goals. It has an important role to play in poverty alleviation, particularly in developing countries. On the other hand, tourism is most sensitive to and vulnerable to physical, socio-economic and political disturbances: the tsunami in Malaysia and Thailand, SARS in South-East Asia, the attacks in Bali and Egypt, the economic crisis in Argentina and more recently worldwide, all affected - at least for a number of months - the international arrivals. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector. There is a rich experience of responsible tourism in the southern part of Africa.
