How would you feel if you were barred from your favourite pub or shop purely on the grounds of your hair or eye colour, your height or some other distinguishing feature that is peculiar to you? My guess is that you would be rather hurt and angry at such blatant discrimination and may well inform the bar tender or the shop staff in no uncertain terms, including words that cannot possibly be repeated here, what you think of them. Have you ever considered the possibility that those with a disability are still hated, despised, feared and discriminated against within UK society simply because of their disability? Furthermore, have you considered, if such discrimination exists within the health and social care systems, what the implications of such discrimination could be on those with a disability and what it says about us as a society, as nurses and health professionals and as individual citizens?
