Performance of pregnant and lactating ewes and does on pasture.

Eight Finewool Synthetic ewes and 8 female Marwari goats were grazed on improved natural and Cenchrus ciliaris pastures from the 1st month of gestation to the end of the 3rd month of lactation, at a stocking rate of 4 animals per hectare. All females produced offspring, and all the offspring survived to weaning. Milk yield of the dams was significantly higher on Cenchrus than on improved pasture. On both types of pasture, weaning weight was significantly higher in lambs than in kids. It was concluded that a stocking rate of 4 animals per hectare is suitable for pregnant sheep and goats of the types studied.
