Sporotrichosis in ruminants.

An outbreak of sporotrichosis affecting cattle and goats was recorded in Cuttack district of Orissa, India [date not given]. The animals developed cutaneous nodules containing pus-like material mostly affecting prefemoral and pre-scapular lymph nodes. The disease affected 1.78% of cattle and 0.35% of the goat population in that area, and was more frequent in adult cattle (approx. 84%) than young ones. Sporothrix schenckii infection was confirmed after similar cutaneous lesions appeared 81 days post-inoculation of pus obtained from affected animals in an experimental bullock in the neck region by scarification method. The animals were successfully treated by application of betadine solution.
