Comparison of SEMG signals of healthy and amputee subject for elbow movement

Surface Electromyography Signals (SEMG) technologies have prominent acceptability for controlling prosthetic devices among amputee. However, most of them are based on SEMG analysis of healthy subjects. There is the need to study SEMG of the residual muscles of the amputees who had lost their limbs more than ten years ago in comparison to the healthy subjects. In the present investigation, elbow movements from single location near elbow of a healthy subject were studied and the results were compared with an amputee (distal to the elbow). This research is useful for correlating phantom movement and SEMG activities in the stump muscles even when the limb-loss period is significant. It was observed that extension movement in the amputee achieved higher values of V_(rms) than flexion movement. Pronation and supination showed no significant changes in SEMG. These observations were almost similar with those observed from a healthy subject.
