Relationship: From staff nurse to nurse consultant Part 8: Mental health problems

This is the eighth article in the staff nurse to nurse consultant series which is exploring'relationships'. Subsequent issues in the series will be examining, relationships with patients' relatives and tips on how to handle personality clashes and a look at the relationship you have with yourself. This issue examines relationships that we have with people who might have some kind of mental health problem. 'What experience have you had of people with a mental health problem?' That is a question I regularly ask to groups of qualified adult general nurses undertaking a post-registration course in general practice nursing. On average, 15% have a member of their immediate family who has some quite significant and long-standing mental health problem.
