On 25 April 2012, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) launched a new UK-wide commission with the specific aim of investigating the current system of educating pre-registration nurses. The commission is being independently chaired by Lord Willis of Knaresborough and will collect evidence throughout the year with a view of producing a final report at the end of 2012 (RCN.2012). It is, however, important to stress that the current NMC standards for the pre-registration education of nursing students were only introduced in 2010 and some universities are yet to implement them. The reasons why the RCN has decided to launch this commission at a point when the new NMC pre-registration standards are being rolled are linked to recent events where registrants have been criticised for poor care delivery.
