One of Britain's biggest privately owned Maltsters export malt throughout the world for the distillation of whisky. The company approached Newland Engineering, Hyde, U.K. to discuss the problem of loading vehicle containers with malt which had previously open loaded directly from a silo outlet. However, as the malt suffered degradation when shipping in tanker type containers it was decided to consider a different method of transport.Standard shipping containers arriving in the UK were available at economic rates on return journeys, therefore it was decided to utilise the containers fitted with a plastic liner. Previous ideas of roof hatches, or open top containers were unacceptable to the shipping companies, hence an end method was sought.
