The Bulk Handling Group of Alstom Automation Ltd. at Whetstone, Leicester, specialises in coal, resultant ash and dust and limestone handling for thermal power stations and associated facilities.Specific characteristics for these bulk materials are reviewed and related to the necessary geometric parameters required to ensure good handleability in the plants designed. Power station projects in which the Group has been involved with over the last five years and those projected for the future are referred to as examples of how the materials' characteristics have been considered and utilised in the design of cost efficient, highly reliable plants. A thorough knowledge of boiler operations is a prerequisite to achieving the optimum capabilities of the handling systems.
