Mobile Ad Hoc networks (MANETs) are wireless networks which is infrastructure less means it does not require any central administrator for communication between mobile nodes. Due to its open architecture MANET is vulnerable of various types of security attacks. In this category flooding is a very serious type of attack which exhaust the resources of the network. In flooding attack a malicious node block the valid communication of the entire network by flooding a huge amount of fake RREQs to all nodes in the network, thus degrading the performance of resulting network. This attack can be of any type Hello packet flooding, Route Request (RREQ) flooding and Data packet flooding attack, in order to identify neighbor nodes, route to the destination and send data packet to the destination respectively. Thus an efficient technique, which must be able to identify fake RREQs and drop them accordingly, is needed. In this paper we analyses the impact of RREQ flooding attack on network and proposed a novel mechanism hierarchical cluster based RREQ flooding avoidance, which exploits the mesh tree concept in order to reduce the impact of this on the performance of MANET. This technique is unique in terms of dynamic adaptability and route security due to hierarchical cluster based approach. The simulation result shows that the proposed mechanism gives better performance under the RREQ flooding attack in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio, Routing Overhead and Throughput.
