摘要

Power failure is a common problem in third world countries. Generators run by internal combustion engines are the only solution. This mode of power generation has several problems, which call for immediate solution. Noise control has become a major concern in designing the internal combustion engines. With this view, a unique method of sound intensity mapping of various components of four cylinder diesel engine of Cummins make that operates 125 kVA generators is done and results are reported in the present study. In the present investigation ranking of various important components of diesel engine like fuel pump, alternator, fuel injector, mufflers, exhaust, turbo unit manifolds are done. Further new positions are suggested with a possibility of noise cancellation. Instruments used for the present studies are of B&K make 1/2" microphones connected to direct sound intensity measuring unit. Intensity measurements performed in the present studies add vector notation in the mapping and the sound emitted can be recorded or can be measured in situ without elaborate arrangements like anechoic chambers or reverberating chambers.
