March for the alternative.

On Saturday 26th March I joined the estimated 500 000 people who took to the streets in London to protest against the Government's cuts to public services. As a student nurse, it may seem premature to be protesting-I'm not yet employed as a public sector worker and haven't had lots of experience of the NHS. But when I qualify this summer, I want to be able to give the best patient care possible, and to work in a positive environment, in which time can be given for supporting newly qualified staff. Furthermore, I want to know there will be a job to go to. But I have spoken to many nurses and had enough experience on placements to know that the Government's plans to cut frontline nursing staff will harm patient care, and cause the nursing workforce-already stretched and demoralized-to suffer more. I have also heard with concern that jobs for newly qualified nurses will be harder to attain. So for me, there were more than enough reasons to join the TUC-organized 'March for the Alternative'.
