Alternate indigenous therapy for bovine mastitis

Antibiotic udder infusions are being used indiscriminately for the treatment and control of mastitis. Antibiotic therapy with intramammary infusions and systemic inoculations has many demerits (Guterbock, 1992) such as the high cost of antibiotic therapy, adverse effect of antibiotics in milk on the manufacture of dairy products and recommendations of long milk out time, amount of milk that has to be discarded and inevitable increase in the number of infringements of health regulations relating to antibiotic residue in milk has necessitated to look for drugs which can reduce the exposure of pathogenic bacteria to animals' teats. Cellular antioxidants, micronutrients could be potentials to .maintain mammary defence mechanism including neutrophil function and antibody production. Fang et RAID.. (1989) found 68.5 to 82.1% cure rates in cows with clinical mastitis following oral admirfistration of decoction of herbs. Present study is therefore, designed to evaluate Bonmilk, a herbal oral therapy in clinical mastitis.
