Testicular degeneration: a cause of impotentia generandi in breeding bull

Case description: A crossbred bull from an organized farm in Rajasthan was reported to have deteriorated breeding performance since attainment of puberty. The bull was treated by the local veterinarians without any improvement in the fertility rate.On andrological examination, general appearance, health and locomotary system of the bull were observed to be sound, but the right side scrotum was remarkably enlarged, turgid and hard on palpation. The exploratory puncture of the affected side of scrotum neither revealed any exudate nor specific signs of inflammation. Since the bull had impaired fertility from the age of puberty and did not respond to any treatment given, the surgery of affected scrotum was performed under local infiltration of anaesthetic solution. A longitudinal incision was made along the length of hard mass in the scrotum. The thick albugenia and surrounding attachments were incised till the entire mass upto spermatic cord could be manipulated freely. A long artery forcep was applied at the base of spermatic cord and two ligatures were placed. The cord was incised and entire mass was removed. The scrotal wound was closed in routine fashion followed by daily antiseptic dressing. Post-operatively, the animal was administered antibiotics for five consecutive days with favourable recovery. The scrotal mass removed was kept in 10 percent formaline for histopathological studies.
