Genetic analysis of economic traits of Murrah buffaloes maintained at livestock farms of Uttar Pradesh

The performance records of 493 Murrah buffaloes, progenies of 61 sires, were analyzed using two different statistical models in the present study. The means along with variability, heritability estimates and genetic and phenotypic correlations amongthe traits were worked out for age at first calving, milk yield in 300 days of first lactation, first lactation milk yield, milk yield per day of lactation length, milk yield per day of age at second calving and first lactation length. The study indicated that for the genetic improvement programme of buffaloes 300 days milk yield may be better trait than FLMY due to lower environmental variation in MY300. Keeping the increasing trend of AFC over the years, moderate and significant heritability estimateand higher CV of MY/ASC and genetic correlations of MY/ASC with other traits in view, it may be further inferred that for simultaneous improvement of AFC, first calving interval and milk yield, the MY/ASC may be the traits of choice.
