Factors affecting birth weight in Rambouillet X Sonadi crosses

Birth weight of an animal is first observable quantitative trait, which reflects the inherent ability for growth. The animals having higher birth weight am likely to grow faster and may have higher overall productivity. Hence this trait can be usedas tool of selection. The data on birth weight of 204 Rambouillet X Sonadi halfbreds extended over a period of 10 years (1985-1994) were obtained from Govt. Sheep Breeding Farm, Chittorgarh (Rajasthan). The entire duration of 10 years was divided into 5periods of 2 years each and the year was divided into three seasons viz., winter (October-January), summer (February-May) and rainy (June-September). Due to non-orthogonality the data were analysed by using least squares technique of fitting constants asdescribed by Harvey (1979). The significance of sub-class differences was tested by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) as modified by Krammer (1957). The heritability of birth weight was calculated on adjusted data by paternal half sib correlation method as described by Hazel and Terril (1946). The standard error of heritability estimate was obtained by using the formula suggested by Swiger et al. (1964). The overall least squares mean of birth weight was estimated as 3.17+-0.11 kg. It is well comparable with the findings of Kulkarni and Deshpande (1990) in Merino halfbreds.
