Evaluation of awareness of different categories of livestock owners of West Bengal about some reproductive parameters of a cow

Exploitation of maximum potential of a cow for its productivity depends on the awareness of the livestock owner about reproductive parameters, which under field condition is related to socio-economic condition, the technical know how available and his interaction with different sources of information. Hence, different categories of livestock owners have varied levels of awareness about reproductive parameters of a cow. The present investigation therefore was undertaken to evaluate the difference inawareness levels about reproductive parameters among various categories of livestock owners. One hundred and seventy livestock owners from two villages of Chakdah block of Nadia district in West Bengal (W.B.) were randomly selected. However, considerations were made to draw sample size in such a way that at least 20 per cent of total population of livestock owners was from landless, marginal, small and medium - large categories. A "schedule of inquiry" for survey was prepared, pre-tested and appropriate modifications were incorporated. Reproductive parameters selected for the investigation were, onset of puberty, time of insemination, interval between successive breeding, period of pregnancy diagnosis and post-partum insemination. Evaluation of awareness of different categories of livestock owners about five reproductive parameters was done statistically as per methods of Snedecor and Cochran (1989).
