Bacterial isolates from zoo birds and their drug sensitivity

Out of a total of 127 samples collected from dead and ailing zoo birds subjected to bacteriological examination, 95 (74.80 percent) were positive yielding 106 isolates. The most predominant isolate was Escherichia coli, followed by Citrobacter freundii, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Salmonella typhimurium and Klebsiella pneuminiae. On the other hand, Staphylococcus was the most frequently isolated gram-positive bacteria, followed by Streptococcus spp., Micrococcus spp., Enterococcus spp. and, Pneumococcus pneumoniae and coagulase-negative staphylococci. In-vitro susceptibility patterns revealed that the Gram-negative isolates were highly susceptible to enrofloxacin, followed by nalidixic acid, furazolidone, cephalexin, chloramphenicol and gentamicin, co-trimoxazole, and tetracycline and streptomycin, while all were resistant to ampicillin. The Gram-positive bacteria were most susceptible to enrofloxacin, followed by gentamicin, chloramphenicol and cephalexin, kanamycin, tetracycline, erythromycin and ampicillin.
