We depend on metals in practically all areasof life. The term is derived from the ancientGreek word μ?ταλλον (métallon, quarry) andstands for certain chemical elements. Theiratoms form a lattice with free moving electronsthat is characteristic in each individualcase. The typical properties of metals, suchas electrical and heat conductivity, ductility(formability) and metallic lustre, are based onthis structure.
