Just-in-Time Scheduling: Models and Algorithms for Computer and Manufacturing Systems

We can formulate the just-in-time scheduling problems that this book presents in two different application areas: production planning and computer systems. The goals of a just-in-time production-planning and control system, which Toyota introduced, are to supply customers with the products that they want when they want them, to minimize inventories, and to reduce cost. Its intent is to complete orders as close as possible to the due dates that customers want. However, adjusting a company's production system to ensure that additional cost to the organization does not exceed the savings is a major difficulty. Although a goal of just-in-time scheduling is to reduce inventories, its implementation offers additional benefits, including better production quality shorter delivery times, improved flexibility, more efficient utilization of worker capabilities, and better relationships with suppliers.
