Processing, Sintering and Properties of MgO/CaZrO_3 and MgO/ZrO_2 Composites

Two batches of dolomite-zirconia (DZ) and magnesia-zirconia (MZ)) were proportioned to prepare MgO/CaZrO_3 and MgO/ZrO_2 composites for different advanced applications. The produced batches were subjected to different firing temperatures, namely 1400, 1500 and 1600 deg C. Phase compositions of the prepared composite samples were investigated using XRD and scanning electron microscope (SEM) attached with an EDAX unit. Sintering parameters (bulk density and apparent porosity), cold crushing strength and refractory properties (permanent linear change (PLC), thermal shock resistance (TC), refractoriness and refractoriness under load (RUL) were also investigated. Both composite batches are characterized by good sintering, mechanical and refractory properties properties. However, the dolomite-zirconla mixture exhibits unique characteristics. The good sintering, mechanical and refractory properties of such composites in addition to their well compact microstructure (especially doiomite-zirconia) enable their use as engineering materials and in high temperature applications, particularly in rotary and shaft kilns burning lime, dolomite, magnesite and Portland cement.
