U.S. Automobile Companies, Labor Unions Oppose Japan's Entry Into TPP

U.S. auto companies and labor unions have stepped up their longstanding opposition to Japan's entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), arguing that it will undermine the ability of current partners to reach a high-quality agreement and fail to make real reforms to roll back Japanese non-tariff barriers. In a Feb. 21 memo, Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC), said that Japan has historically used non-tariff measures, including currency manipulation, to protect its market from competition.
