A trade policy analyst from the Cato Institute this week questioned whether it makes sense for the United States and European Union to place such an intense focus on regulatory outcomes in upcoming bilateral trade and investment talks, especially because the inclusion of these issues could make the talks more difficult to complete. "I'm a little skeptical," said Simon Lester, about the focus on regulation in the U.S.-EU talks, though he said it could produce important benefits for both sides. He warned that both sides may be wise to adopt a practical approach. "If we try to do too much, we may end up with nothing," he said at a Feb. 27 event on the trade talks.
