The European Union is considering instituting a ban on imports of North American lobster after a Swedish risk assessment found that the lobsters could be an "invasive species," but the U.S. and Canada are pushing back against the legitimacy of that assessment and the dispute has garnered attention on Capitol Hill. The European Commission's Scientific Forum on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) is expected to decide whether to accept a risk assessment prepared by the Swedish Agency for Marine Water and Management by Aug. 31. If the forum chooses to accept the risk assessment, the Standing Committee on Invasive Alien Species will then determine if the North American lobster meets the criteria of an LAS at its October meeting, according to a commission response to a parliamentary question.
