FURTHER TO OUR report in January (IM January '07, p. 13) on the debate over the possible closure of Pumex SpA's 400,000 tpa pumice operation on the island of Lipari, Italy, recent action by the authorities appears to have sounded the death knell of the mine. That said, Pumex expects to make an announcement in May regarding future business, which it claims is positive. In early February the Mining Department of Catania declared that Pumex was not authorised to carry out any type of work on pumice inside the former Porticello quarry, and that work must cease immediately.
