Iluka Resources, the world's largest mineral sands miner, revealed in January that while its output was lower in 2013, sales volumes increased in rutile and zircon markets. The company produced 68,500 tonnes zircon, 22,200 tonnes rutile and 116,400 tonnes of ilmenite in Q4 2013. Zircon production was up 21%, rutile decreased 61% and synthetic rutile fell 100% in the quarter when compared to the same period in 2012. Ilmenite production meanwhile remained stable in the last quarter of 2013.
