Australian resources group WMC remains confident in its plans for a business demerger, despite full year profits that fell by 47 percent in 2001.WMC proposes to split into two new resource companies-WMC Resources Ltd, and Alumina Ltd. WMC rejected a full takeover bid by Alcoa (its joint-venture partner in Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC)), and proposed the demerger to protect the value of the two businesses (see IM January '02, p.8).Alumina Ltd will include WMC Ltd, and AWAC's interests, including commodity and speciality aluminas. WMC Resources will consist of WMC's copper, uranium, nickel and fertiliser assets, plus development projects such as the Corridor Sands minsands project in Mozambique.
