THE TEXAS TALC industry has consolidated with Wold Talc Co.'s acquisition of the talc operations of Zemex Corp.'s subsidiary Suzorite Mineral Products Inc. (SMPI). This marks Zemex exit from the the talc business. SMPI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zemex and part of its industrial minerals division, operated a 35,000 tpa talc plant staffed by 26 employees at Van Horn, Texas, producing talc grades for ceramics, plastics, and coatings. The facility was originally built in 1959 under The Pioneer Talc Co. In the early 1 980s the plant was sold to Whittaker, Clark and Daniels and was operated by the company until late 1 994. At that time, Zemex Corp. purchased the facility and incorporated SMPI.
