There is great difficulty in anodizing with high copper, aluminum alloys. Dissolution, poor wear resistance, poor corrosion resistance, and the need to seal, preferably with dichromate, which causes environmental concerns, are all common problems with high copper, aluminum alloys. Casting materials, for example A380 aluminum alloy, have a poor response to anodizing. This treatment for such alloys also results in poor corrosion and/or wear resistance as well as generally poor color response. The solution to all these problems, frequently, is to apply a pure aluminum coating to the product prior to anodizing. This company has been applying this technique for almost three years with great success, using the ion vapor deposition process for depositing pure aluminum alloy substrates.
