Control of Alopecurus myosuroides (black-grass) in the new millennium with mesosulfuron+iodosulfuron; early trials results and successful stewardship

Trials carried out in England during the development phase of a formulated mixture of mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron, between 1998 and 2003, confirmed the excellent activity of this product for the control of black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides). Havingreceived approval from Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD), this product was launched in UK in 2003 as "Atlantis~R WG", for the post-emergence control of black-grass, and a range of other grass-weeds in winter wheat. Following previous experience and bearing in mind the status of black-grass resistance in UK, a well-defined resistance management and stewardship programme was implemented, which has proved to be successful in maintaining the usefulness of this product in the UK market. The trials have shown the benefits of a programmed approach to controlling A. myosuroides, with products and tank-mixtures with different modes of action. Continuing careful stewardship of products containing mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron, and other active ingredients whichare used in programmes for black-grass control, is essential, bearing in mind that no new active ingredients with different modes of action are known to be in the pipeline for the UK market.
