Industrial Heating Launches ASM Student Scholarship Campaign

Without a doubt, one of the most troubling problems facing many IH readers is the ability to hire and retain qualified workers. We have run many columns in this magazine decrying industrial "brain drain." At least seven columns in as many years have dealt with this basic issue, including Editorials (4/01, 1/02, 12/02, and 9/06), Federal Triangle (6/03 and 9/05) and this column (12/06). Instead of complaining, Industrial Heating is doing something about it. For decades, ASM International has focused on reaching both students and professors. The link that ASM has created between industry and academia is well known, and it can be seen in the plethora of magazines, books and seminars they publish and produce. ASM's substantial financial involvement in the Center for Heat Treat Excellence at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, their Materials Camps for college and high-school students, and their nearly endless library of reference materials for students, professors and young thermal-processing engineers all speak volumes about their commitment to bridging the gap between students, universities and industry.
