Clinico-biochemical and therapeutic studies on clinical colibacillosis in cross-bred calves

The crossbred calves suffering from colibacillosis revealed increased respiration and heart rate, profuse diarrhoea with loose consistency and mild dehydration. Haematological findings showed nonsignificant increase in haemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume and total erythrocytic count. Lower mean values of blood pH (7.176+-0.04), plasma bicarbonate (16.57+-2.42 mmol/l) and total carbon dioxide (18.75+-2.42 mmol/1) along with higher partial pressure of carbon dioxide (47.80+-3.21mm Hg) were seen. The blood biochemical analysis indicated significantly lower value of plasma sodium (132.00+-1.79 m Eq/l). Following treatment (enrofloxacin and Ringer's lactate) the haematological, blood gas and acid-base status and blood biochemical parameters returned towards normalization by the 5th day with complete clinical recovery in all the calves.
