Objective : To study the relative importance of indoor air pollution and aeroallergens in childhood asthma in this part of Orissa. Design: Population based case control study. Place : Semi-urban and Urban schools of Berhampur. Period -of Study:August 2010 to October 2010. Method : Study of status of domestic air pollution and aeroallergens was made through school children by pre-tested questionnaires sent to parents. Asthma and non-asthmatic cases were analyzed for its relationship to risk factors, while the later serving as controls. Results : Out of 518 responses from 6 schools, 466 were included as valid response 82 being asthmatics and 384 non-asthmatic controls. Prolonged passive smoking before mother when pregnant (O.R. = 3.18), passive smoking before the child (O.R.=2.42), poorly ventilated house (O.R = 3.97), Kitchen (O.R = 1.56), keeping pets like cats and dogs (O.R = 1.93), pet birds in the house (O.R = 3.72), presence of moulds or fungi in the ceiling of house (O.R = 8.25) and child's room (O.R = 19.5) were significant risk factors for asthma. Conclusions : Besides ethnic and genetic predisposition, environmental factors like indoor air pollution and domestic aero allergens could play a significant role as risk factor in childhood asthma.
