Diabetes is the single most important metabolic disease which causes death and disability worldwide. Global presence of type-2 diabetes in the year 2000 is 171 million which is likely to be 366 million in the year 2030. The problem is even stroker in developing countries. India, which has not yet been able to come out of the clutches of infectious diseases and still has the highest number of Type-2 DM patients in the World. In India the prevalence of diabetes is expected to increase to 80 million by 2030 accounting for almost 1/6th of the world. The epidemic proportion of diabetes in India. There is hidden population of pre-diabetes. Impaired Glucose tolerance (IGT) and Impaired Fasting Glucose (IFG) are both considered to prediabetics according to WHO. Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) with 2 hrs post-prandial value of 140-190 mg/dl. IFG denotes an abnormality high fasting Glucose concentration which falls short of diagnosis of diabetes (Plasma Glucose 100-125 mg/dl).
