Effect of propofol with isoflurane or sevoflurane on cardiopulmonary and haematological parameters in goats

The study was conducted to compare the cardiopulmonary and haematological effects of propofol with isoflurane or sevoflurane in 12 healthy adult goats. The animals were divided into two groups, A and B. Following premedication with atropine (0.25 mg/kg), the anaesthesia was induced with propofol (4 mg/kg) and maintained by isoflurane (2-3%) in animals of group A and sevoflurane (1.5-2%) in group B. The efficacy of different anaesthetic combinations was assessed by determining various clinical, cardiopulmonary and haematological parameters before (base line) and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 min during anaesthesia. There was significant difference in respiratory and heart rates, but non-significant difference in haematological parameters. Recovery from anaesthesia with propofol-sevoflurane was shorter than that of propofol-isoflurane combination. It was concluded that both combinations of propofol with isoflurane or sevoflurane were effective anaesthetic regimen with least cardiopulmonary effects in goats, however, recovery with sevoflurane was rapid.
