Nutrient acquisition by the plant is an integrated process to which plant growth, root morphology, movement of nutrients across the soil to the plant root and kinetic aspects of nutrient uptake by the root contribute significantly. Nutrient uptake models have been proposed which integrate the above factors to predict the rate of nutrient uptake (Silberbush and Barber, 1). Most of the models proposed have kept in view only the short duration crops and annuals. Practically, no attempt seems to have been made to apply these concepts to explain the differential behaviour of perennial fruit crops. Therefore, an attept has been made to study the role of two factors, viz, root morphology and nutrient uptake kinetics in the acquisition of phosphorus by some grape varieties and a rootstock.
