12,511 Trust is essential in a relationship, especially one with your car's sat-nav. Recently, I've fallen out with the Toyota Auris Hybrid's sat-nav system, which I find rather counter-intuitive. Such systems are only ever as effective as the person operating them and, most of the time, I try to do without. But when I'm visiting friends, it seems like good manners to plug the route into the sat-nav and keep them abreast of my estimated time of arrival. Last Saturday I was travelling from my home in Basingstoke to Bidford-on-Avon, near Stratford. My instinct, reinforced by Google Maps, said that going up the A34 and M40 would be the most direct way. The Auris Hybrid's sat-nav - configured to optimise a 'fast route' - disagreed, suggesting instead that I take the A339 right through Newbury town centre, on to the M4, the A419 around Swindon, a short stretch of the Fosse Way and then the A44 towards Evesham.
