While the Mini was a great innovator, it is often forgotten that it actually followed in the footsteps of the Fiat 500, or Nuova Cinquecento. Designed by Dante Giacosa, who'd also penned the original Topolino back in the 1930s, it got the jump on the Mini by such a margin that even by the time it presented itself to our testers in 1959 for its second full road test, the Mini had yet to be announced to the press.
