With 296bhp and active four-wheel drive, it had the rampant all-weather performance that we expected, but many of the previous all-wheel-drive mega-hatches from the VW Group and elsewhere have proved to be all muscle and not much character. However, the Golf R marked a departure by serving up surprisingly adjustable, bombastic handling. But can this new estate version match the hatchback's handling finesse? In short, yes, it can. Despite having gained 32cm in length and 79kg in weight over the hatch in the process of increasing its load bay capacity from 380 to 605 litres, the Golf R Estate remains a riot to drive.
