An economic analysis of cocoon production in Theni district of Tamil Nadu.

Results are presented of a study conducted during 2006-07 to investigate the costs of mulberry and cocoon production, as well as the return per unit area, in Theni district of Tamil Nadu, India. The results indicated that new bivoltine sericultural technologies should be adopted to increase the leaf yield per acre and cocoon productivity. The techno-economics may also be adopted to reduce the production cost since most of the respondents have confessed about the higher labour cost and shortage of manpower. The bivoltine coverage should also be increased, which can help the sericulturists to get more income from sale of cocoons. Minimum support price should be introduced for bivoltine hybrid cocoons to encourage the farmers to continue the sericultural activities even in the event of price escalation of materials. Future prospects and suggestions are given to improve both the quality and quantity of cocoon production and sustain sericulture in the study region.
